Francis Fukuyama On Why Liberal Democracy is in Trouble

I just heard a great 7 min NPR interview with “The End of History” author Francis Fukuyama on the demise of western liberal democracy. Trumpism is but one manifestation of this.  However, it is the most impactful on Canada.  Trumpism is also being imported into Alberta’s political culture but the Wildrose Party and more recently by the takeover of the Progressive Conservative Party by Social Conservative forces lead by Jason Kenney. policy priorities in the economy, the environment, social justice leading to church-run authoritarianism.

Trumpism is but one manifestation of this decline and decay of democracy and related institutions.  However, it is the most impactful on Canada. You just have to look at the campaigns of Kellie Leitch, Kevin O’Leary, and others in the current leadership campaign unraveling in the Conservative Party of Canada.  Trumpism is also being imported into Alberta’s political culture but the Wildrose Party and more recently by the takeover of the Progressive Conservative Party by Social Conservative forces lead by Jason Kenney. policy priorities in the economy, the environment, social justice leading to church-run authoritarianism.

Trumpism is also being imported into Alberta’s political culture through the Wildrose Party and more recently by the takeover of the Progressive Conservative Party by Social Conservative forces lead by Jason Kenney. They are pushing anti-liberal democratic philosophies in their policy priorities in the economy, the environment, social justice areas.

While Kenney is still silent to coy on what he intends to do in policy initiative after he runs the PC Party into the ground and runs WRP leader Brian Jean out of provincial politics.  One this is patently obvious, a Jason Kenney Alberta will not be a liberal democracy.  It will be a kleptocracy economically, a church-run autocracy socially and a government-industry collusion to deny delay and discard any climate change efforts or other environmental precautionary policy approaches.

While Kenney is still silent to coy on what he intends to do in policy initiative after he runs the PC Party into the ground and runs WRP leader Brian Jean out of provincial politics we will suffer the consequences if Kenney or Jean ever get political power.  One thing is patently obvious, a Jason Kenney or Brian Jean Alberta will not be a liberal democracy.  It will be a kleptocracy economically, a church-run autocracy socially and a government-industry collusion to deny delay and discard any climate change efforts or other environmental precautionary policy approaches.

Apathy is not an option for Progressives in the Province of Alberta.  This is especially true for those of us who are progressive and have benefited greatly by the past progressive approach to governance in our province.
