Reflecting on Escalating Combat in the World at Easter Time

The populist and sycophantic media focus on the war-machine technology of the Mother of All Bombs drop on Afghanistan and the launch of 59 Tomahawk missiles on a remote airbase in Syria is on my mind this Easter Sunday.

The why of this is not clear to me.  I see the strongman motivations of a morally deficient President who needs a diversion from his shortcomings. I see the symbolism of proportionate responses to evil in the world.

What I don’t see is the way towards the resolution of the conflicts from any of the leaders in the “free” world.  That is more about empathy, understanding, compassion, generosity and respect for people who are victims of the conflicts, especially those who are seen as different from “us.”  Muslim Bans are not the way forward.

As well the sacrifices of putting military people in harms way by those who command them must be also be evaluated in terms of proportional responses too.  I was struck with this realization as I happened upon this magnificent version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters in the context of an American Memorial Day celebration.  Listen carefully to the lyrics in the context of the conflicts in the world and the service and sacrifices of those in uniform and their needs for our empathy, understanding, compassion, and respect because they too are victims of the conflicts.

Listen carefully to the lyrics in the context of the conflicts in the world and the service and sacrifices of those in uniform from the USA and all the NATO and UN Forces deployed around our troubled world.  Think of their personal and family needs for our empathy, understanding, compassion, and respect because they too are victims of the conflicts.  It gets complex and difficult to know what to do but that is no excuse for us to forget our duty as citizens in democracies and dedicated ourselves to a more perfect

It gets complex and difficult to know what to do but that is no excuse for us to forget our duty as citizens in democracies and dedicated ourselves to a more perfect humanity.

It gets complex very quickly when you think about it.  It is difficult to know what any one individual person can to do.  But that is no excuse for us forgetting our duty as citizens in democracies.  It is no excuse to avoid dedicated ourselves to be better persons.  It is not a free pass for us not to engage and strive towards perfecting ourselves so we can contribute more to humanity, in the world, and in our communities.

Enjoy and reflect.

Happy Easter.
